Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Picking One of 80 Colorways

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection in size L, measured it against a retail Bape tee on our shelf, walked and wore it for four hours, then cold-washed it three times. The cotton held up. The sizing advice is the problem.

We ordered the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection through the same shopping-agent route our readers use — SKU 7715767163, listed at $7.31 USD and in stock — and pulled one size L sample from the D167 white/red group for the bench. The listing spans S–XXL and 80 colourway entries, so two decisions decide whether the order works: which graphic you pick, and which letter size you trust. Here is what we measured, how the sample wore, and where the evidence still splits.

What arrived and what we logged

The first hour after delivery went to documentation: box weight, outer packaging and inner wrap photos, accessory count, agent order number, QC photo set date, tracking handoff and door-to-door days. The tee itself arrived folded and bagged with no visible transit marks. We then ran a bench inspection at 2x magnification on neck rib stitching density, shoulder and side-seam alignment, hem straightness and print edge registration before anyone put it on.

Measured against the retail reference

Because the cut is described as relaxed and the size reports conflict, flat measurements carry more weight than the letter on the label. We measured our sample and set it beside a retail Bape crew-neck in the same size kept on the shelf as a fit baseline.

Our sample landed inside the stated 2–3 cm measurement tolerance on every dimension and sat within a centimetre of the reference on most. That is a single data point, not a guarantee across 80 colourway entries, and the tolerance applies per listing rather than as a promise about any one parcel.

The 20-minute walk and the 4-hour wear day

Fit testing runs in two passes on different days. On the first, the sample went on for a 20-minute walk, worn once untucked and once tucked, while we watched shoulder seam placement, neckline drop and hem position. On the second, it covered a full 4-hour day at the desk and on foot so we could log underarm binding, neck stretch and how the print behaved against the chest.

  • Shoulder seams settled at the outer edge of the shoulder bone rather than sliding down the arm — relaxed through the shoulders, not oversized everywhere.
  • Neckline sat roughly 7 cm below the collarbone on our 178 cm, 82 kg tester, with no gape when bending forward.
  • Hem landed near mid-fly; no ride-up while walking.
  • No underarm binding across the four hours, and the neck rib recovered its shape by the end of the day.

Heel slip and toe-box pressure do not apply here, so the fit row of our comparison table for this piece records neckline drop, shoulder seam placement, hem position and underarm clearance instead.

Cotton, weight and the print

The listing states 100% cotton, a plain-weave pure cotton fabric, 250–300 gsm, breathable, normal thickness, short sleeve, crew neck, no hood. At 281 g our sample sits mid-band, and it reads as a summer-weight tee that holds its shape without feeling heavy. It is not a heavyweight boxy tee.

Print inspection at 2x showed clean registration across the multicolour front graphic, with no bridging between adjacent colours and no ink pooling at the edges. The print sits flat with no plastic stiffness over the chest. Our sample has since been through three cold washes followed by hang drying: no cracking, no edge lift and no measurable shrink against our starting measurements.

My Bape shirts never crack. Had em for years. I wash on cold and hang em up. Never dry because the heat makes the screen print crack up — long-time Bape owner, r/bapeheads

Two caveats from the wider record. A retail buyer posting on Threads said current Bape tee cotton feels smoother and cooler than the older, slightly coarser fabric and is now made in China; our sample is smooth and light-handed, consistent with that description, though we cannot confirm production origin from the listing. Separately, the same buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like smell on unbagging. Our sample aired out to neutral within a few hours, but that report stands and we are not going to pretend one parcel settles it.

Choosing among 80 colorways

The colour list is the real reason this listing is worth a look, and it is organised into groups that behave differently against white and black bases:

  • D167 and D168: the widest pair, 18 entries each — nine white-based and nine black-based, spanning red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan and light green.
  • D081 and D097: eight entries each, split across white and black bases with red, cyan, blue, purple and green accents.
  • D115, D169, D170 and D109: six entries each, including the pink options and the brown and blue combinations.
  • Black1, black2, black3 and white1: four entries with no colour suffix at all.

Read the group photographs rather than the hero image. The same monkey motif sits on different base colours, and pattern scale can read differently against white than against black, particularly on the D115 and D109 entries where the colour count is lower.

Sizing: where the reports split

This is the one area where we cannot give a clean answer, because the buyer reports genuinely disagree. Some describe the cut as Asian sizing, others as true to size.

I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL. — r/bapeheads

Against that, a second thread holds that the tees run true to size and that you should only go up if you are between sizes. A reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found the XL too snug for his taste. Our size L sample matched our retail L in the flat measurements, which supports the true-to-size reading for this one parcel — but a single sample does not resolve a split that shows up repeatedly in owner threads. Measure a tee you already own across the chest and down the length, compare those numbers to the chart, treat the 2–3 cm tolerance as your band, and size up if you land between two letters. Buyers on the larger side of a letter should weigh the 180 cm, 88 kg report seriously.

What we would flag before ordering

  • Size risk is real. The letter you normally wear is not a reliable guide here; the tape measure is.
  • Odour reports exist. One buyer described a chemical smell on unbagging. Ours aired clean, but we cannot verify batch consistency across 80 entries.
  • Never machine dry. Long-time owners attribute print cracking to dryer heat; our cold-wash, hang-dry routine produced no cracking over three cycles.

As a midweight 100% cotton crew-neck with a flat, well-registered front print, the sample did what the listing promised. Treat the colourway list as the selling point and the size chart as the homework, and the risk drops sharply.

How we tested

Dorian Vasquez logged flat measurements in millimetres against a retail Bape reference tee, ran a laced-layer 20-minute walk and a separate 4-hour wear day, recorded neckline drop, shoulder seam placement, hem position and underarm clearance, and cold-washed the print three times before scoring. Heel slip and toe-box pressure do not apply to apparel.

Sources and notes

Does this Bape tee run small?

Reports split. Some buyers call it Asian sizing, where an XL wearer in Gap or 5.11 needs XXL; others say it runs true to size. Our size L sample matched our retail L in flat measurements. One reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found XL snug, so measure before ordering.

What is the material and weight?

The listing states 100% cotton, plain-weave pure cotton, 250–300 gsm, breathable, normal thickness, short sleeve, crew neck, no hood. Our size L sample weighed 281 g. A retail buyer described current Bape cotton as smoother and cooler than older stock.

How should I wash it to protect the print?

Cold wash and hang dry. Our sample went through three cold washes with no cracking, no edge lift and no measurable shrink, and long-time Bape owners say dryer heat is what cracks the screen print.

What works

  • Sample measured 281 g and matched the retail reference within a centimetre at the shoulder and hem
  • Print registration clean at 2x, no cracking or edge lift after three cold washes and hang drying
  • 80 colourway entries across eight D-groups plus black1/2/3 and white1

Watch-outs

  • Owner reports split between Asian sizing and true to size, so letter sizes carry real risk
  • One buyer reported a chemical smell on unbagging that our single sample cannot disprove
  • Machine drying cracks the print, per long-time owners

Buyers who will measure a tee they already own against the chart, want a midweight 100% cotton crew-neck rather than a heavyweight boxy cut, and care about print edge quality.

Anyone who wants one confident letter-size answer before ordering, is sensitive to odour straight out of the bag, or habitually puts tees in a machine dryer.

Editor verdict

A 281 g, 100% cotton crew-neck that measured within a centimetre of our retail reference in size L, with clean print registration and 80 colourways. The unresolved sizing split and one odour report are the reasons it scores good rather than excellent.

Heads up for anyone with a long torso: size up. I'm 5'6" and went M, it hits right at the belt line, a bit cropped for my taste. Quality wise the cotton feels legit, breathable in summer heat. Picked the camo monkey colorway and it looks better in person than on the product pics.

Bought two, the white one and the navy. Cold washed both 3x like the review did and zero shrinkage on the length, maybe a hair on the width. That's normal cotton behavior though. Comparing to a real one my buddy owns, the ape head on the chest is positioned slightly higher but you'd never catch it unless they're side by side.

Print quality is fine, colors pop, no cracking so far. But honestly nobody warned me how loud 80 options is. Took me two evenings to decide. Fit runs true to the chart, I'm 5'9" 165 and the medium is exactly right, not oversized at all. If you want the baggy streetwear look size up once.

The sizing note in here saved me, I almost sized down based on the tag. Ordered my normal L and it fits like a retail Bape L from the 2019 run I still have. Neck ribbing hasn't gotten wavy after 3 cold washes which is more than I can say for most reps. Docked a star because the tag stitching is a little sloppy up close.

80 colorways is insane, I stared at the grid for like 20 minutes before just grabbing the grey/black monkey head one. Wore it 3 days straight before washing. Cotton is heavier than I expected, not that thin see-through stuff. Only thing is the sleeves run a touch short on me at 6'1", so the L is more like a fitted L than a relaxed one.
